Meet Bakul Oza, who fought sadness & depression and healed through gardening

Gardening for Happiness:

How Plants Heal the Mind

Who doesn’t know that stress is harmful? In today’s fast-paced world, many people struggle with loneliness, anxiety, and emotional pain. Yet there is one simple activity that quietly heals the mind and soul: gardening for happiness.

Research has shown that spending time with plants reduces stress, improves mood, and strengthens our connection with nature. For many people, gardening for happiness becomes a path toward emotional healing and inner peace.

Meet a person whose story will touch your heart deeply and inspire you to spread the love of gardening among our seniors, parents, and even busy professionals.

Mr Bakul Oza faced life’s greatest challenges with courage and embraced gardening as a source of joy and healing. Gardening acts as a healer for lonely minds, keeps us engaged, and brings us closer to nature.

This story is taken directly from his post in our Facebook community, Gardening Ideas and More (India). Let us know your feelings in the comment box.

How Gardening for Happiness Helped During Difficult Times

“I live in Ahmedabad. When I look back, life was tough, but I had no choice.

My wife was in a coma for seven long years while my only son was still a child. We could do nothing, and eventually she passed away.

I was terribly shocked, and depression took over my life. My son was only 10 years old at that time.

I tried my best to give him the best life I could.

Today, he has grown into a mature young man. He studied very well and is currently serving in one of the best software companies in the USA.

Throughout those years, I was very lonely, and depression was slowly consuming me.”

Life often tests us in unexpected ways. Stories like Mr Oza’s remind us that gardening for happiness can offer comfort when life feels overwhelming.

How Plants Changed His Life

“My son and friends advised me that since I had completed my Master’s in Zoology, I should engage myself in gardening and maintaining a fish aquarium—my old hobbies.

I was convinced and started gardening using my knowledge and skills.

I have not spent a single rupee on plants or fertilizers. I only had to buy pots. I also bought a large aquarium.

Then began my journey with plants—their care, their growth, and the joy they brought me. I smile, talk to them, and care for them throughout the day.

Now, I am once again enjoying my life. Thanks to my son and friends.

I have written my story only because it may help someone overcome depression.”

His words inspire us to pause, reflect, and embrace nature. We do not need to be experts to begin. Sprouting is natural. The breeze is natural. Water is natural. We simply need to follow nature.

Have patience. Look at the leaves. Feel the beauty around you and realize how precious life truly is. This is the true essence of gardening for happiness.

Benefits of Gardening for Mental Well-Being

Mr. Bakul Oza has shown us that age is never a limitation when it comes to enjoying life fully. He fought sadness and depression through gardening. He stays busy with plants, loves them, talks to them, discovers new things every day, and regularly helps others create gardens to overcome stress and stay away from depression.

His story reminds us that many people experience personal loss and stressful moments in life. Yet he inspires us to find joy in flowers, leaves, rain, and within our own minds. Gardening for happiness is not merely a hobby it is a lifestyle that nurtures both plants and people.

He shared this heartfelt message with us:

“Thank you, everyone, for responding to my post with likes and kind words for me and my son. My son also wants to thank you all.

When his mother left us, he always believed that I was his mother first and then his father. My son is my world.

I am not an expert, but I have vast experience in gardening. Anyone can message me for guidance.

Whatever I know, I will definitely share.

Thanks again.”

Stories like these remind us that gardening for happiness is more than growing plants; it is about growing hope, healing, and a renewed love for life.
